BOARD MEETING MINUTES

November 14, 2013

Members Present: Tom Turriff, Ina Mapes, Joe Dylewski, Neil Deppe, Joe McGowan, Steve McNeil, Ed Drager, Tom Simester, Jim Karp, Pepe Estrella, Tamara Hutto, Savo Fries, and Mark Miller

Members Absent: Roger Bogard and Steve Harsch

Guests: Jim Lamb and Jim Pfeiffer

Called to Order:  10:00 a.m. by Tom Turriff

President’s Report:  Tom Turriff  

  • R.I. President Burton is asking the clubs to promote membership growth, enhance humanitarian service and strengthen our Network through Family of Rotary.
  • Our club will submit for the Presidential Citation by March 31st.
  • The District Conference will be April 25-27 at the Hilton East Tucson.  Our exchange student is planning on attending.
  • SBRCF is re-missioning itself; this will affect how the Club and Foundation interact.
  • The loss of Foundation grant benefactors will be addressed by the Community Grants committee.
  • There is a new dependence on The Rotary Foundation and District 5500 grant money.  This issue will be addressed by the Rotary Grants committee.
  • Attrition must be addressed.  Additionally there are six members not current on dues.
  • Jim Lamb will be the FFK chair.
  • The club needs to dedicate itself to the use/awareness of the Basha’s card program.
  • Steve McNeil moved and seconded by Savo Fries to commit $1870 in the current budget to the Nogales water project. In addition the international committee will attempt to reduce costs in their relationship-building efforts. Passed.
  • The next Board meeting will be December 19.

Nominating Committee:  Steve McNeil

  • Steve McNeil moved and Joe McGowan seconded the motion to nominate Jim Lamb to the club as the next President-elect. Passed.
  • The committee is responsible for nominating candidates for Treasurer, Secretary, President-Elect and Sgt at Arms.

Secretary:  Joe Dylewski

  • Joe handed out a sheet tracking members who have missed the last three meetings and currently are below 50% in attendance.

Treasurer’s Report:  Mark Miller  

  • Mark is working with Steve McNeil to bring the budget up-to-date.
  • We have submitted an $1870 matching grant application to the District for the Nogales water initiative.

Past President Report:  Steve McNeil

  • Nothing to report.

President-Elect Report:  Vacant

  • Nothing to report.

Rotary Foundation:  Tom Simester

  • Mark Miller is still collecting donations for his ride in the El Tour De Tucson.

Club Admin:  Steve McNeil

  • Nothing to Report.

Community Service:  Ina Mapes

  • The club will support Catalina Community Service’s (CCS) Thanksgiving baskets, a request is for Stove-Top dressing boxes, which will be collected next week.
  • Ina said Coronado K-8 was very appreciative for our delivering of Spanish-English dictionaries.
  • Ina is asking members to help support CCS’ Adopt-A-Family program for the holidays.

Membership: Joe McGowan

  • Steve McNeil moved and Tom Turriff seconded the granting of a Leave of Absence to Sharon McKniff.  Passed.

SB Foundation: Roger Bogard (Absent)

  • Nothing to report

Director of Communications:  Savo Fries

  • Savo thanked the board for their inputs to the club calendar.
  • Minutes, financials and by-laws all posted to website.
  • New ClubRunner website will be operational in December. Savo will need any posting by 9:00 AM on Wednesday, to be on the website prior to Thursday’s meeting.

Family of Rotary:  Vacant

  • Nothing to Report.

Sergeant at Arms: Jim Karp

  • Nothing to Report.

International:  Pepe Estrella

  • Pepe read a testimonial from the Nogales club expressing their appreciation for all the support our club president has given them for the school water project.

Programs: Neil Deppe

  • Nothing to report.

Youth Services: Ed Drager

  • RYLA applications are due to district by November 30th.
  • Oracle school will participate in the 4-way speech contest on November 21st.
  • The club will begin selling golf cart raffle tickets starting Nov 23 at Safeway and Basha’s on Nov 27.

Other Board Business: Board and Guests

  • The Family of Rotary board position is currently vacant.
  • Tom Turriff moved and seconded by Joe McGowan to authorize our Treasurer to move funds from the Bank of Tucson to a better money market account. Passed.
  • Jim Pfeiffer will send a draft to the board members for review and edits regarding the issue of Honorary Membership standards and guidelines.
