This is the only facility in the world that has the engineering and technology to manufacture these large light-weight primary telescope mirrors.

Lisa Hansen of Sold No More
 
Lisa Hansen, the Education Director of Sold No More, spoke on Human Trafficking in the Tucson Area.  Lisa speaks to schools in the area in an effort to prevent Human Trafficking.  Tucson has the 2nd highest rate of Human Trafficking in the nation and the average age of the victims is age 11.
Jim Lamb - Chairman Polio Plus
 
SaddleBrooke Rotary was proud to have former member and President of
our club speak on his new role as Rotary Polio Plus Chairman.  As Rotary has 
helped to eradicate Polio worldwide, there are still areas of concern that need 
to be funded.  Rotary International, with the help of the Gates Foundation, is well on
the way to making this world Polio free.  Thank you Jim for your service.

Veterans' Memorial Cemetery
New President, Doug May, awards Bonnie Dudelston 
with a commemorative plaque. American State Veterans' Memorial Cemetery Administrator, Bonnie Dudelston, spoke to our club about 
the earned privilege of Veterans and their families to be be buried with honours at a National Cemetery.Earlier this year Rotary donated 108 trees to the new cemetery in Marana.  Local Rotary members helped to 
plant these trees on February 14th.

On May 31st SaddleBrooke Rotary was proud to award 6 Charities with money earned from our 2018 Fore 4 Kids Charity Golf Tournament.  This year SaddleBrooke Rotary netted almost $40,000 during our 20th Annual Charity Event.  We apprciate all of our sponsors and look forward to next year.

Reverend Debra J Stevenson, Director of Springboard, was our guest speaker on April 5th.  Springboard is part of Teen Challenge and  serves as a home for adolescent girls in crisis.  This faith based organization has seen some 9,000 girls, restoring their lives.  Whether drugs, alcohol, abuse or neglect, Springboard provides a safe place for girls to find hope and healing.

Maury Anderson from Post 273 in Bellevue, Iowa is one of the founders of the Iowa Freedom Rock Project.  This Veteran's Appreciation Project memorialize our troops with granite glaciers hand painted by Bubba Sorensen II in Iowa's 99 counties.

Neil Deppe and Joe Hentges present Joe Guyton with the Rotary Foundation Award for his work as last year's President to help end Polio worldwide.  During Joe's Presidential year, SaddleBrooke Rotary had 100% participation in "Every Rotarian-Every Year" with a minimum of $100 financial contribution per member.

Moe, founder of Malicats, graduated and played basketball for the University of Arizona.  Sponsored by Lute Olsen, Moe is retired from professional basketball and is mentoring kids in his home country of Mali.  Malicats builds schools for underprivileged kids in West Africa.  Moe is giving back by offering kids a chance to go to school and play basketball in Mali.

A special thanks to Dave Jungbluth of the Mammoth/San Manuel School District for facilitating our SaddleBrooke Rotary Club Student of the Month Awards.  In fact, Dave was given an honorary Paul Harris Award for his commitment to the students.  Atlantida and Isabella were honoured with a plaque and a cash donation for their excellence.  They will both start at Northern Arizona University on a 4-year full scholarship in the fall.

Thanks to Representatives of Shelter Box for their presentation on the impact of Rotary International on their organization.  Mr. Jorgensen of Human Factor Consulting, spoke on the need Worldwide for their Charity.  Right now nearly 85 million people around the world are displaced by natural disasters and conflicts.  This is at an all time high since World War II.  Bill Woodward, Response Team Member spoke to the adaptability of the Shelter Box for the needs of different Regions and Tragedies.

The Golder Ranch Fire District was created in 1977 by a vote of the residents in the area. The homeowners wanted to have a voice in their fire and medical care and at the same time, monitor costs. Today the District serves a 222 square mile area with a population of nearly 60,000 residents. Included in the District are the communities of Oro Valley, Catalina, SaddleBrooke and southern Pinal County.

Make A Wish Arizona
 
In 2018, the 20th Annual Fore 4 Kids Charity Golf Tournament will partner with Make A Wish.  Make a Wish grants children with terminal or life altering illnesses with precious life experiences.  Ava Tomae was able to realize her dream of going to New York City with her family to be behind the scenes in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Instructor Joe Pinella has studied and practiced the ancient Chinese healing arts of Qigong and Tai Chi Kung for over fifty years. The real test of his experience came in 1991 when he broke his neck and back in a horrific auto accident in Flagstaff Arizona, that left him quadriplegic. Using these arts he was able to overcome severe disabilities and regain the use of his body, with no pain and no limitations. Desire.....Determination......and Dedication, coupled with these arts, gave him back his life! He now uses his personal healing experience to empower others to rehabilitate and recover their health and live a better quality of life using his “Healing Movements System”.
 
AZ Fish & Game
 
Jimmy Simmons, Wildlife Manager Supervisor Region V Tucson, fascinated members and Amigos of the SaddleBrooke Rotary Club meeting on January 25th as he described a Day in the Life of a Game and Fish Warden.  Jimmy described the many ways the department touches our lives, even if we don’t fish and hunt.  No taxpayer dollars support this department as all funding comes from licensing.

Dr. Arvind Phukan from the Rotary Club of Tacoma, WA spoke on the challenges and solutions to provide safe drinking water to the poorer rural areas of the world.  He is currently working in Assam, India.  This aligns with SaddleBrooke Rotary Club's water project in Mexico.

Ukulele Concert
Members of the SaddleBrooke Rotary Club were treated to two concerts at our last meeting. First we heard the joyful music of Christmas accompanied by the Ukulele Group which grew out of funds raised by our Art for Kids fundraiser last year.  Next we heard a Christmas concert from the Strings students at Mountain Vista School in Oracle.  Both groups are under the direction of Kaitlyn Miller.

One of our vital local charities was represented this week by Dr. Maria Chevalley.  The Tri Community Food Bank serves Oracle, San Manuel and Mammoth in Pinal County.   The Food Bank is staffed by volunteers and $0 operating costs
Oracle Schools Foundation

Cathy McCall is an Advocate for Organ Donation.  She and her husband lost their son, Jim, in a tragic motorcycle accident before his 20th Birthday.  Thankfully, Jim was an Organ Donor.  He made this decision after 3 of his classmates died in the same week.  Later in his family's life, his sister Meredith was saved by another Organ Donor.  Nobody knows better than the McCall Family the miracle of organ donation.  Their son will live on through the lives he saved with his gift.  And, their daughter will live a healthy life because of the kindness of another donor.  Please talk to your families about this.

Bob and his wife JoAnn moved from Cedarburg, Washington to SaddleBrooke in 1999.  Although Bob's interest in photography started at an early age, he became serious about 17 years ago.  Since then, Bob has published 20+ Photography Books.

Currently, the UofAZ leads the OSIRIS-REx mission, an $800 million NASA mission that will bring back a sample from the asteroid Bennu. The UofAZ also has the most internationally active program to identify and track Near-Earth Objects (NEOs). More than half of all known near-Earth asteroids and comets have been discovered by the UofAZ.

VOSH or Volunteer Optometrical Services to Humanity was started by Ed and Sheila Tuhy as members of the SaddleBrooke Rotary Club.  VOSH provides glasses and optometrical services for people who do not have access.  Regular trips to Mexico have provided sight to the vision impaired in poverty stricken areas.

Beverly Arriaga is the Parent Awareness & Community Outreach Coordinator for the Pinal Region.  Beverly gave a compelling speech on the importance of early child development which is lacking in much of Pinal County.  In fact, studies show the 90% of a child's critical brain development happens between birth and age 5.
