Chris Cornelis, Assistant Town Manager Oro Valley and Margie Adler, Economic Development Specialist at Oro Valley Safe Steps.
“OVSafeSteps was created to help our local businesses, and also to recognize that each of us has a role in reducing the spread of COVID-19. We need to work together and commit to responsible actions to move forward. This program will benefit businesses, and it will also benefit residents who are interested in supporting our businesses,” said Mayor Joe Winfield.

Our program on May 6 featured Danette Bewley, President and CEO of the Tucson Airport Authority.

Danette Bewley is from San Diego, CA, where her passion for aviation began. Her Dad was a decorated Navy fighter/combat pilot, stationed at NAS Miramar (now MCAS Miramar), and who later transitioned to a career as a commercial airline pilot for Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA - was headquartered in San Diego, CA, and primarily served the west coast).  PSA later merged with US Airways (and is now part of the American Airlines family). Throughout her childhood and into adulthood, Danette had the opportunity to be in and around many types of military and commercial aircraft, and fly simulators with her Dad, which gave her an even greater appreciation and understanding of aviation and further fueled her interest to pursue an aviation-related career path. Her airport management career began in 1989 and has spanned over 31 years, and is still going strong.
“I love what I do, and can’t imagine a different career. I am blessed to work in an industry that is both dynamic and challenging, that serves so many people, and allows me to work with so many great people,” said Bewley.

Oracle Community Center
The Oracle Community Center is a 501C (3) charity located in Oracle, Arizona.  The organization serves lunches at a low price to anyone in Oracle every Monday, sometimes serving 70 lunches. This event not only provides meals but serves as a real meeting place for the community. Pertinent information is shared at that time regarding current events.

Leaders from the Rotary Club of Saddlebrooke joined board members and clients recently at their facility for lunch and to present a check for $5,000.00.  Proceeds will be used by the organization to upgrade the kitchen stove and sink.  Also, included were funds to augment the Emergency Fund.

The Emergency Fund addresses the immediate needs of some residents with financial problems related to Covid. This fund aids area families for things such as funeral costs, utility payments, and other immediate needs.

Saddlebrooke Rotary Summer Meetings

Join us Thursday, June 3, 2021 for a special meeting.  The Rotary Club of SaddleBrooke will be meeting at SaddleBrooke Ranch during the summer months. Historically speaking, one reason why the world’s largest volunteer organization is called Rotary is because it originally met in rotating locations. In that spirit, and due to a growing number of new members from SaddleBrooke Ranch, the Rotary Club of SaddleBrooke will be meeting at the Ranch House at SaddleBrooke Ranch during the summer.

Our summer move will include weekly lunches and interesting programs on Thursdays, in the private room at the Ranch House. It will also include monthly happy hours at the Ranch House patio. This move will include meetings from June to October. Then the Rotary Club of SaddleBrooke will return to its home base at the SaddleBrooke One Clubhouse.

Saddlebrooke Rotary Plans In Person and Hybrid Meetings
WE ARE ANXIOUSLY ANTICIPATING REINSTATING IN-PERSON MEETINGS !!!!!!!

The Saddlebrooke community is blessed to have organizations such as Saddlebrooke Rotary and Saddlebrooke Senior Village, not to mention the Desert Life Pharmacy.

What a year we have had.  Thanks in a large part to Saddlebrooke Senior Village and Desert Life Pharmacy we are fast approaching full vaccination of our members, and we are now looking forward to once again meeting each other in person.  One of the great lessons learned has been the inclusive benefits of having a virtual meeting option.  We call ours Zoom at Noon.  During the Covid pandemic our club has been able to maintain active participation through this format, continuing to average about 30 participates per meeting.

We are developing alternative meeting options that may include hybrid (in-person and virtual) meetings, alternative meeting sites and other meeting upgrades.  In the weeks that follow we hope to begin limited in-person meetings which are consistent with safe Covid guidelines.  We are hopeful that by the beginning of the next Rotary year, July 1, 2021 we will be again meeting in person, but with the addition of Zoom access at the same time.

Mark your calendars for a Celebration on Thursday, July 1, 2021(in person) as we Pass the Gavel to our next president, Liese Razzeto.

If you would have suggestions the following key meeting contacts are available to discuss these with you:

Joe Guyton, Club President
Ed Treick,  HOA1 options
Dan Watson, Saddlebrooke Ranch options
Gordon Wainwright and Joe Guyton, conferencing technology.

It takes the work of many members to run a very active club like The Rotary Club of SaddleBrooke.  We are very thankful to our members who contribute so much to our club!  We could NOT do all we do without the leadership of a number of our members!

Please let us know if you or a loved one in your family would like to have our prayers, thoughts, or encouragement.  We are a family and we strive to support each other.

Great news!  Bill "Doc" Pohnert was at our in-person meeting at Saddlebrooke HOA1 Clubhouse on Thursday, April 29 and reported that his cancer was now in remission.  Fantastic, Doc!  It was great to see you at Rotary again.

We heard from member Joe Jones that he had a heart attack and was going to be treated chemically.  It was good to see you at the meeting on May 6, Joe.  We will keep you in our prayers.

Lessons From the Blue Zones

Program Speaker for March 4, 2021

Denise Steffan

My journey into health and wellness began in 1997 when I started receiving massage while working as a paralegal and competing as a cyclist. Faced with the demands of working full time and training for bike races, massage therapy proved to be a vital component to relieve stress and maintain a healthy body for competition. Inspired by the tremendous benefits, I made the decision to pursue a career in massage therapy.

I graduated from the 1000 hour program at the Desert Institute of the Healing Arts (DIHA) and have been a licensed massage therapist since December, 2000. Following graduation, I continued training through numerous continuing education programs and seminars which included Neuromuscular Therapy, Cranial Sacral Therapy, Ayurvedic Therapy, Hot Stone Massage, and Body Wraps.

As I worked with my massage clients, I realized nutrition played an integral part in how our bodies respond and heal. After many years of studying nutrition on my own, I began studying at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and in December of 2013,  I became a Certified Health Coach.

During my training, I studied over 100 dietary theories, practical lifestyle management techniques, and innovative coaching methods with some of the world’s top health and wellness experts. My teachers included Dr. Andrew Weil, Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine; Dr. Deepak Chopra, leader in the field of mind-body medicine; Dr. David Katz, Director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center; Dr. Walter Willett, Chair of Nutrition at Harvard University; Geneen Roth, bestselling author and expert on emotional eating; and many other leading researchers and nutrition authorities.

My education has equipped me with the knowledge and  skills to work with my clients to help them make lifestyle changes that produce real and lasting results.

Oro Valley's Future is Bright
Oro Valley's Outlook is Bright

Rotarians from Saddlebrooke and their guests were treated to a remarkably interesting presentation by Dave Perry, President of the Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce during their regular meeting on Thursday, February 11, 2021.  Perry himself a former Rotarian reviewed the many exciting developments and initiatives that residents and visitors to Oro Valley will see in the future.

One such development that Perry discussed was the Town West Realty's multi-purpose development in the Marketplace at the southwest corner of Oracle Road and Tangerine Road.  He also spoke of the new University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine located in the Foothills Business Park across from Steam Pump Ranch on Oracle Road.

Perry emphasized the need for improvements in Oracle Road as the rapid growth in Oro Valley and other communities has significantly affected this important arterial road in northern Pima County.
